Data over UHF CB - for March 2005 " Silicon Chip" article - PICAXE-08M controlled?
Radio regulations common to Australia/NZ allow data ( suit telemetry/telecommand) to be sent over licence free UHF CB channels 22 (476.950MHz) & 23 (476.975MHz). Given their absurd cheapness (as low as A$25 each) & their multi km long range (even further with antenna such as those mentioned Feb.2005 SiChip ), these CB handhelds make an attractive "engine" to explore wireless data comms. Data rates as fast as 1200bps ( perhaps via 2 tone AFSK) can be sustained over these voice grade sets, but considerable encoding is first needed - perhaps via specialised modem ICs. Decoding is increasingly being handled by clever software running on PC sound cards.
This first Silicon Chip article however looks at human readable (gasp!) info. generated as simple tone sequences from a DS18B20 & Picaxe 08M.
Australian/NZ regulations relating to the UHF CB Radio Service (CBRS) are maybe best initially sourced from the Australian ACA site -numerous subsections can be accessed from here.
NOTE: The 3 seconds an hour data duty ratio may be in limbo, since the Nov 2004 regs. update no longer mentions this restriction !
